Dr. Downey volunteers as board of directors president for the Beaverhead Trails Coalition (BTC), a local non-profit dedicated to increasing non-motorized travel. The mission of BTC is to promote the creation and use of walking, biking, and hiking trails in and around the Dillon community. The BTC has obtained grant funding to establish a Safe Routes to Schools program including the walking school bus, for building the Pigtail Connector Trail, and acquiring over 700 acres of land with hiking trails in the west foothills of Dillon.
